I've always been fond of brides changing into a second dress for the reception. One that is just as striking as the ceremony gown, but allows you to freely and easily maneuver between the reception tables (as you greet guests) and, of course, allows you to party the night away on the dancefloor. What I like most is that you can have a little fun with the second dress by changing the style, the length or even the color. These are just a few shorter length options that recently caught my attention (both by designer Ramona Keveza):

With my 5th anniversary approaching (January 7th), I've spent a lot of time happily reminiscing on our wedding day. We had a wonderful, winter-themed wedding and thankfully all of the details came together just as I envisioned and planned it.... but, that was 5 years ago!

Of course, being a planner, I attend lots of weddings. At each one, there's always a part of me that says, "If I could do it again with a different style, theme, color scheme, attire, location, etc... what would I create?" So, it was that exact thought that led me to a new idea for an on-going blog topic I've entitled "DRESS the wedding".

Since the bride's gown is one of the most important elements of a wedding, these blog entries will include inspirational photos of details, creating a united wedding design. However, everything will be based around a different wedding gown as the starting point... fun!

Now I'm on the hunt for the first gown inspiration! So, be sure to stayed tuned for our debut "DRESS the wedding" blog post coming soon!

Gina and Lance tied the knot at the Sheraton Harbor Island in San Diego, California. Selecting blue and white as their main color scheme, the couple incorporated island/beach elements into their wedding which tied in perfectly to their waterfront venue.

Searching the internet, you can literally find anything. Today, I ran across these cute little diamond ring eraser stocking stuffers. The fun part is that, when erasing, you create your own facets on the "diamond" (too cute). Definitely the perfect little gift for keeping you "flawless"!

Wispy, White & Wintery

I just had a bit of a "word association" moment and decided to turn into a quick blog entry.

I'm a born & raised SoCal girl (wouldn't have it any other way)! Yes, I'm "spoiled" by nice and sunny weather nearly all year-round. Living here, we don't get to experience the true meaning of winter, as many other areas do (and, believe me, I'm not complaining). Today, for example, it's December 5th and our weather is still in the mid-high 60's (love it)!

Here's where my mental word association began. As I sat here thinking of (real) winter, I automatically thought of snow... which made me think of snowballs. However, I have no true experience with snowballs. So their white & round shape made ME think of beautiful clusters of baby's breath! Of course, others of you in snowy weather may have different ideas you associate snowballs with. But, nope, my mind thought of fluffy white centerpieces (I guess that's the SoCal wedding planner in me).

It's amazing how the tiny blooms of baby's breath can make such a huge statement when gathered together and beautifully arranged into vases. Not only is it budget-friendly, but it also provides a dreamy and romantic feeling, especially when coupled with candles.

So, with this being an idea that came to mind after thinking about snowballs, I found a few examples of baby's breath centerpieces that would be perfect for winter wedding tablescapes.

SOMETHING BLUE: "cocktail" rings on the rocks

Recently we've seen them everywhere (and they're certainly not easy to miss). I'm referring to those large, bold and beautiful cocktail rings on the hands of many stylish women. And being a self-proclaimed "accessories addict", I must admit that I have a fair share of these "little" eye-catchers myself.

But, nothing that I own compares to Piaget's new swoon-worthy collection of cocktail rings, inspired by (none other than) actual cocktail drinks. Yes, I'm completely in love! So, in keeping with the theme of my "Something Blue" blog entries, let me share a few of the yummy BLUE baubles from the Piaget Limelight Party Cocktail Rings collection....

On this wonderful day, we come together and take time out specifically to reflect on our many blessings. When I stop and actually think of all of the things that I'm thankful for, I realize that it would take me quite a while to type everything into this blog entry (and I'd possibly risk missing Thanksgiving dinner).

But, I'd definitely like to share a quick few...

I am so very thankfully for my family and friends that show their unconditional love and support.
For my husband that is by my side through all of my ups, downs, accomplishments and disappointments. We laugh often on our many good days, he puts up with my crazy days and he loves me always.

I'm thankful for having a business that not only brings me an abundance of joy, but also allows me to share my passion and gifts while working with wonderful couples on one of the biggest and happiest days of their lives.

For my life and being given a new day each morning (which also means being given a new opportunity each day).
For having life's "basic needs" (food, water and shelter) during these rough and uncertain times, when so many people are struggling just to have those same 3 needs met daily.

I'm thankful in advance (and ever so hopeful) for what 2011 has in store. There's something that keeps telling me it's going to be a great year!
I'm unspeakably thankful for my Father in Heaven that continues to shower me with blessings. Without Him, the above list (including the things I didn't type) would not be possible... thank YOU!

Today was unusually scorching here in San Diego. And, as with most every random thought of mine, my mind wandered to something wedding-related. So, as I turned the fan on "high", I immediately pictured guests awaiting the bride's arrival as they sat miserably in the beaming sun. Now that's a horrible scene to have on your wedding day!

Yes, we all love warm sunny weather, but I'm certain that you don't want your guests to be uncomfortable. So, if you're planning an outdoor wedding (especially in the summer), be sure to consider ways of keeping your family and friends cool and comfortable.

Consider these options:

Rent umbrellas to create shade or have a basket of parasols for guests to grab on the way to their seats.

Arrange for a water station containing chilled bottles

or dispensers filled with cucumber and fruit-infused water

Fans can be placed on each seat and they also serve as a special keepsake.

But, in addition to keeping your guests cool, don't forget to keep them protected as well. Cute little monogrammed bottles of sunscreen are a nice and thoughtful touch.

Beach Weddings... Things to Know

Many couples envision a beautiful beach backdrop for their wedding day... especially here in San Diego! But, before doing so, there are certainly some things to consider:

1.) Above all... if your ceremony will actually take place in the sand, make sure that your guests know that ahead of time. Therefore they can dress appropriately.

2.) Consider providing a "shoe valet" area where guest can trade their nice shoes for sand-friendly flip-flops.

3.) Keep in mind that your ceremony will likely be facing West. So, a sunset affair can leave your guests squinting the entire time. Be sure to suggest that they bring sunglasses, wear a fashionable hat, etc.

4.) The beachfront view might be lovely but the weather can be tricky. If it's a warm day, provide water and cool drinks. However, if the day is chilly and windy, guests may need to be reminded to bring jackets, sweaters or wraps.

5.) A beach wedding is usually not the ideal location for wearing a full, formal ballgown or a long cathedral length veil. There are a number of designers with beautiful (yet, less formal) style wedding gowns that are a perfect match for a beach wedding. You can always change into a 2nd dress for the reception!!! And don't forget about your shoes... nix the heels and choose some glitzy flip-flops or just go barefoot.

6.) Have a back-up plan. Not only can rain ruin things, but strong winds can be a hassle too. So, definitely be prepared with a "Plan B".

7.) The sound of crashing waves can be relaxing on most occasions... but it can be quite noisy during a wedding. If allowed, have amplified sound so that your guests can hear your vows and not just the sound of the sea.

8.) Be sure to obtain any needed city permits and carefully read through the rules and guidelines for your specified area.

9.) Don't forget that most beach sites are public. So, if unwanted on-lookers are not to your liking, a beachfront ceremony may not turn out to be as romantic as you envisioned.

10.) Finally, if the above list seems like more than you can handle while planning your beach wedding, then definitely hire a wedding coordinator to assist you with the details.

At a recent seminar, I had the opportunity to meet the owners of The Lollicake Company and also sample a few for myself. Their product is simple, cute and delicious. Basically, picture a lollipop on a stick. But instead of candy... it's a round piece of cake that you bite into and enjoy! I tried red velvet, strawberry and carrot cake and all of them were much tastier than I expected.

Since these treats are wrapped individually and come in a variety of flavors, they make great "thank you" favors for weddings, showers or birthdays. And multiple Lollicakes gathered together as a bouquet makes a cute gift. The company can even create stands for you to place the lollicakes on, to resemble a tierd cake.

It's definitely a little fun and a whole lotta' Yummmmm!

This year my Halloween costume is a no-brainer. In September (at an industry conference) I picked up this blinged-out, rhinestone "Wedding Planner" T-shirt. So, as Halloween approached, I saw it in the closet and decided to go ahead and make it my "costume".... simple and easy!

The best part... it comes complete with business cards and a clipboard accessory LOL! I can't wait to wear it. This will be fun and most-likely generate a few questions and conversations.

Tiers Of Joy!

Next to the wedding dress, many brides see the cake as one of the top wedding "accessories". A beautiful cake can add that special touch to your wedding decor and many times compliment the theme that you've created. So, don't let your cake just hide in a corner of the reception room. Instead, let it stand out....... Here are a few ideas:

If your site has a spacious entry into the reception room, position the cake near the doors so that guests can view it from all sides as they enter the room to take their seats.

Use lighting to accentuate the cake table. Try pin lighting from above to spotlight your delicious dessert... or up-lighting under the cake table linen to create a lovely glowing effect.

Another option is to situate your cake so that it's placed in front of a nice backdrop.

You can also place the cake table on a riser to draw attention to it. Additionally, when it's time to cut your cake, all of your guests will have a clear view of the two of you.

Junipero Serra Museum

Today I was a little early for the meeting with my couple that is getting married on 9/19/09 at the Junipero Serra Museum in Presidio Park. So, as I waited, I took out my camera and snapped some pictures. The views from the museum are amazing, and the historic building is filled with so much character. It's such a charming venue for a wedding.

Unfortunately, when the couple arrived I became so busy with our meeting that I wasn't able to take any photos inside of the museum (where the ceremony will be held). But I must say that, after working out all of the details during our meeting, I'm truly looking forward to the wedding day. I can't wait to see it beautifully transforming into the couple's vision . So, be sure to check again after September 19th for more photos.

Love Is Sweet!

I've noticed that the "candy buffet" is still a fairly popular treat for guests at weddings. Recently, I set one up for a couple's reception. Their colors were purple and green, so a majority of the candy they selected reflected that color scheme. However, they also threw in some chocolates and a few "fun" candies too (like pop rocks and gummi worms)!

So, after looking at these photos I took of my bride & groom's candy buffet, it got me thinking about a few other snacks that couples could offer. I like the idea of...

a display using various flavors of popcorn
or mini cupcakes with the fun icing decorations
how about a sundae bar with all the toppings we love so much
a cookie buffet would be a nice way to share family recipes
or a dessert bar with mini versions of brownies, cheesecake, creme brulee, tiramisu, etc.
and one of my absolute faves are the warm mini donuts, made fresh while you wait... like these here!

But, whatever you come up with it's sure to be a hit amongst your guests.

Practice Makes Perfect

Most people are aware that before the wedding day, there is usually a rehearsal to practice walking up the aisle, locating where the bridal party will stand and to run through any details (like the unity candle ceremony, readings, etc.). But what most people may not be aware of is that, on the wedding day, not only is the bride and groom nervous... but also their bridal party.

I always chuckle inside at the fact that even after practicing the day before, there is usually at least one jittery bridesmaid or groomsman that looks at me with wide eyes and says "Where do I stand again?"..."When do I walk?"... "How do I hold my flowers?"... LOL!

I already know that it's usually going to happen due to "stage fright". So, I'm always prepared with a smile and a calm reply. Yet, even through the nerves, everything always works out perfectly once they take that first step down the aisle.

Jennifer & Caleb

FUN... FRESH... FESTIVE ...
...are just a few adjectives that describe Jennifer and Caleb's April wedding. Their use of colorful gerbera daisies throughout, created a cheerfulness that perfectly matched the couple's personality. These lively flowers could be spotted on the chairs at the ceremony, in the centerpieces at the reception, on the tiers of the wedding cake and of course in the bouquets (all beautifully created by one of my favorite florists, Tesslik Flowers)!

Jennifer and Caleb held their ceremony and reception at the Handlery Hotel. Jennifer was a joy to work with and she was definitely one of the more organized and easy going brides out there. Even at our final meeting, a week prior the wedding, she was so "cool" and had lists and diagrams perfectly arranged. And on the wedding day, she seemed to only get the "jitters" when I informed her that it was time for the ceremony to begin.

A few of the fun details included: the table numbers that each had a photo of the couple, the "C&J" letters that were decorated for the escort card table, the fun wedding-related coloring books that kept the younger guests occupied and the small potted flowers that were favors for the guests to pick up as they left... a fitting ending to a wonderful day!

Follow Your Dreams...

...Whatever they may be... big or small... simple or complex!

If it's something that you aspire to do or become, then follow that dream. Each and everyday I adhere to this myself. I am constantly in the process of moving forward and believing that I will attain what I have my heart set on. But, it's not an easy trip by any means. Sometimes it can feel like a long and uncertain road. At times, paved with stumbling blocks or areas of darkness. But in order to make it through I look to to the heaven... to the stars and beyond and use that as my light.

Then other times, it seems that the my dreams are right within arm's reach... so close that I can feel them... I'm almost there. I have seen and experienced so many positive signs of confirmation and refuse to stop. Faith and hard work never fail.

But when I need an extra boost of inspiration, I listen to "Closer" by Goaple. The lyrics are so beautiful and fitting.

For some reason, I just felt a wave of inspiration and wanted to share it with others. So, keep going... keep moving ...keep following your DREAMS but don't forget to recognize the value of the journey. I guarantee that it will be worth it.

Hot pink and black & white damask print was the running theme for Christy and Scott's wedding.

This fun-loving couple from Sacramento invited 100 of their closest family members and friends to join them for a destination wedding in San Diego. The ceremony was held right on the beach in Coronado Island and the reception was hosted nearby at the beautiful Loews Coronado Bay Resort.

Christy and her sister spent long hours crafting the many detailed accents that tied everything together in a beautiful way. Christy's love of "bling" could be seen everywhere, from the large pink "diamonds" used as part of the cocktail hour centerpieces to the small diamond-like jewels that were adhered to the personalized water bottles, programs, menu cards... and more!

It was truly a joy working with this couple and making their wedding day one that will certainly be remembered.

"SAND" Diego

Today the husby and I fought our way through traffic and headed down to the Imperial Beach Sand Castle competition and street festival. I'd never been before and decided to give it a shot.

Actually, I'm not sure what I was thinking because I spent 10 hours yesterday setting up and coordinating an outdoor wedding, with the ceremony on the beach in Coronado and reception nearby at the Loews Hotel Resort's Marina Terrance. So, I already had enough sun, as well as a sand workout for the weekend. But, somehow I mustered up the strength to go.

Well, after parking about a half mile away, my desire to then walk on the beach and through hundreds of people started to fade. But we still bumped our way through the crowd and I was able to take a few photos before we headed back to the car and back into traffic.

Now I'm relaxing at home and feel doubly drained. I'm sure there were many more sculptures that I missed. But, here are 3 quick pics that I was able to capture:

The one below was was entitled "Beach Bug". It simply looked like a mound of sand with a few arms sticking out of it. I kinda feel like I could have done this one myself LOL!

I believe that this second one was a tribute to Guns n' Roses (with a sculpture of Slash in the middle) IDK??? And, of course, I had to get a picture of the Michael Jackson sand sculpture. There was more to this one and they also had MJ music playing in the background. Unfortunately, it was too crowded and difficult to take pictures. So, I only captured this shot.

Well, in addition to my blog write-up, the couple's wedding was recently featured 2 other times. One included them making the cover of Latino Bride and Groom Magazine, and having a 2-page feature in the magazine.

Secondly, the couple's wedding was also featured here on LA Style Unveiled's wedding planning website.

I'm so happy for them, and it's very special seeing their wedding memories captured in print.

The couple lives in Texas, but chose to host their wedding in San Diego on the beach behind the historic Hotel Del Coronado. 12 family members and friends joined the couple as they exchanged vows in front of this beautiful beach backdrop.

For the second year, I had the opportunity to participate in a tablescape photoshoot for San Diego Style Weddings Magazine. The photo shoot took place at the lovely La Costa Resort & Spa. I was lucky enough to be paired up with one of my favorite florists, Tessilk Flowers and had a beautiful pewter colored linen and coordinating napkins custom made by Elegant Events and stationery made by FRESH Invitation Studio.

Busy... Busy... Busy!

It's been a while since my last blog entry, which is a direct result of how busy things have been lately. However, I had to take a little time to pop in and say "hello".

As you already know, the wedding season is in full swing and the excitement has begun (I truly love what I do)! Over the past few months, I've had the opportunity to assist some wonderful couples in successfully executing their weddings without a glitch... and I look forward to doing the same with the approaching weddings for the rest of this year.

Sam and Natasha were a beautiful couple and such a joy to work with. They selected The Mission Basilica, a charming & historic landmark, to celebrate their wedding ceremony. Then guests traveled to the elegant Rancho Bernardo Inn for the reception.

To celebrate their culture, the couple surprised their guests with a performance by a belly dancer during the reception. Following that, everyone got up and danced the night away!

Crystal & Adam's New Year's Eve Wedding

Last night I coordinated a New Year's Eve wedding for a fun and very loving couple. Crystal and Adam held their ceremony and reception at the Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula in front of 50 of their closest family members and friends. The couple selected black and white as their main colors and used accents of pink for their holiday nuptials.

As guests arrived that evening, they enjoyed cocktails and were later joined by the couple. Then after 45 minutes of mingling, Adam and Crystal left the cocktail hour to change clothes for the ceremony. Following the ceremony, their guests enjoyed an abundance of delicious tray-passed hor'dourves along with a made-to-order pasta bar. And at the end of the night, top hats, tiaras and noise-makers were passed out to celebrate the countdown to the New Year!

A Work In Progress

I've been gradually working on decorating my new office. However, doing so during the holiday season has caused the process to move slower than desired. But, that's ok because I want to make sure that the furniture and accessories I select are truly useful and not chosen impulsively.

Currently, in the office are my 4 black chiavari chairs, a bookcase, file drawer, small table and a number of wedding-related magazines & books (Oh! and a simple sign on the door). I also found the perfect damask fabric to use for recovering the chair cushions and making a table linen. But, I still have a short list of "needs" and "to do's".

Although the office isn't complete, I've already had a few meetings there. Of course, part of being a coordinator involves improvising when needed. So, since my table had not arrived yet, I situated the chairs around my file drawer and used it as a temporary table. I appreciate those couples for understanding and being flexible during this work in progress!

At yesterday's Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) meeting, we had our end-of-the-year holiday party and awards ceremony. And I'm so happy to share that I won the Shining Star Award!

This award is presented to a member that has shown great progress in maintaining their business through their participation in the ABC. This was the first time that the San Diego chapter presented the award. So, that made winning it even more special for me.

I feel honored receiving this award and view it as both a confirmation of my hard work and also a stepping-stone for future accomplishments. Additionally, I love the way my husband keeps calling me a "star".

What a great way to end the year!

Heaven Sent

This Sunday I assisted a "mommy-to-be" by planning & coordinating her baby shower to celebrate the arrival of her baby girl... Payton!

Since her due date is near Christmas, I suggested having a "Heaven Sent" theme, to incorporate a holiday feel into the shower. I decorated the families' Christmas tree with pink ornaments, white lights and white feathery garland. So, as guests arrived, they placed their shower gifts under the tree. Then the ladies walked to the backyard where tables covered in white linens, silver runners and festive centerpieces awaited them. Above head, silver and pink ornaments dangled from the gazebo that was lit by white twinkle lights.

Some of the cutest elements were the various pastries. The "oh so cute" cake and cupcakes were created by Chanisa of Sweet Cake Batter. And as guests left that afternoon, they received angel shaped cookies as favors (with little P's for "Payton" on them). Take a peek:

Pretty in Pink

While I was at the ABC conference last month, the battery in my camera died and I didn't have a moment to replace it. But, luckily, I was able to capture a few photos before that happened.

Today, I finally took a look at the pictures on my memory card and, happily, found some from one of the luncheons that weekend. The theme of the conference was "California Couture" and these centerpieces were designed to fit the theme beautifully.

This one below was created by the talented company at Lavender Hill Wedding & Event Floral. How can you not love the way they incorporated a corset into the design?

I wish that I could recall which company designed the arrangement below because I would definitely give them credit. It's a little difficult to see in this picture, but the large vase is actually comprised of four smaller square vases with pink votives and crystals inside... just beautiful.

And here's a close-up of one of the smaller arrangements that was also on the table above. This cute little "purse" is a nice alternative for your bridesmaids to carry down the aisle.

This third design below was created by The Flower Girl. I love mix of orchids and roses and the way the petals are attached to the vase.

Drum Roll Please...

I'm happy to announce that today I received the keys to my new office. I can hardly express how excited I am about this new step that my business is taking! Of course, I'm ready to begin decorating the office and stocking it with my wedding related books, pictures and samples. But, above all, I can't wait to begin meeting with couples in this comfortable environment (it's small but sweet) and planning amazing weddings for them. This has been a goal of mine for a while, but it was also nothing that I wanted to rush in to. So, with much planning, prayers and positive support... the time was finally right!

I've been recently gathering furniture and other office items. But, in an effort to focus my decorating ideas, I created an inspiration board. The main colors will be black and white with accents of Tiffany blue. Together that will to create my "DAMASK & DIAMONDS" themed office.

I love it and hope to meet with some of you there real soon! So, be sure to stay posted and I'll keep you updated with pictures of the decorating as it progresses. (click photo to enlarge)

Pamela & Albert

Pamela and Albert were married at St. Charles Church in Imperial Beach and held their reception at the Island Club in Coronado for 350 of their family members and friends. Their guests truly seemed to enjoy themselves, as they danced all night long. And, of course, the younger attendees loved filling their favor boxes with sweets from the candy buffet.

PERSONAL WEDDING TOUCH: The couple loves Disneyland and they were going on a Disney Cruise for their honeymoon. So, in celebration of that, the couple made their grand exit to the song, "It's A Small World" while wearing bride and groom Mickey ears!

Beautiful location... lovely decor... great weather... fantastic couple... wonderful wedding...

Those are just a few phrases that could be used in describing Andrea and Craig's big day! The ceremony and reception were held at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. The atmosphere there is so lush, tranquil and serene, which makes it a great venue for exchanging vows.

I loved how the purple, lavender and pink colors popped nicely against the background and how the lanterns softly lit the reception as the sun went down. The pictures below were taken by the amazing photographers at Orange Turtle Photography.

ABC Conference

Yesterday, I returned from the ABC (Association of Bridal Consultants) annual conference. This year, the conference was (thankfully) held nearby in Newport Beach, California from 11/9 to 11/11.

I had a fantastic time mingling with other coordinators, gaining useful information and tips in the seminars and viewing the wedding-related products and services at the tradeshow. But, just as with most events, I return home with tote bags full of magazines, sample favors, candy, pens and stacks of other vendors' business cards. So, it never fails that I have to set aside time to sift through everything.

On the last day of the conference, the spectacular event designer Colin Cowie was the featured speaker during lunch. He presented slideshows from his recent extravaganzas that were truly breath-taking (and literally jaw-dropping).

But, my personal highlight was meeting celebrity wedding coordinator, Mary Dann (widely known from the TV show Whose Wedding is it Anyway). I was fortunate enough to receive a 1-hour one-on-one business counseling session with her that proved to be one of the most inspiring moments in my career as a coordinator. She was so "down to earth" and personable that it was easy to speak openly with her. I've enjoyed watching Mary Dann on TV because of her respectful, up-beat, hard-working and compassionate style. It was encouraging to find out that it's not just an "act" for TV, but her true character. I left the counseling session feeling so fired-up and excited, with new goals and visions for my business.

I truly believe that it's important to have role models and people that positively inspire you in your life to do more and be the best that you can be. This might not be someone that you know personally and it can even be a different person for each area of your life (personal, spiritual, business, etc.). I currently have 5 people that inspire me in the various realms of my life. In the wedding industry, I am quite inspired by Mary Dann and feel certain that my business will advance even more as a result of the advice that she provided to me.

But, overall, the conference ended up being 3 fun days packed with events, information and activities. And, although, I was completely drained by the time I got home... I'm already looking forward to attending next year's conference in Indianapolis, Indiana!

This evening, I returned home after attending the Association of Bridal Consultants annual conference. The past 3 days were packed with fantastic information and inspiration that I'd love to share with you! But, I will have to tell you all about it tomorrow... after I get some sleep!

Black & Bling

Last month I attended The Wedding Salon bridal show at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Although the venue was a bit too small for the number of vendors exhibiting their products/services, it was great to attend a bridal show outside of San Diego. And, you can imagine, that a bridal show in Beverly Hills completely out-did any show here in San Diego. I'm originally from Los Angeles, so being at the show made me want to move back home again and coordinate more weddings in the "city of glam".

There were plenty of wonderful cakes to taste, free-flowing Hpnotiq martinis (my personal favorite vendor) and the event planner to the stars, Mindy Weiss, was present to sign her new book and sell products from her new "Two's Company" wedding line.

One of my other "favorites" that day was a unique wedding cake created by A Sweet Design. It was made using black fondant and lots of sparkling crystals between each tier. The matching centerpieces tied the theme together beautifully. My mind was racing as I envisioned all of the other touches that could be added to this "black & bling" (Old Hollywood style) wedding theme!

Of course, many people would cringe at the thought of a black colored cake for their wedding. But, it actually looked much more elegant than many cakes I've seen! Wouldn't you agree?

Magazine Debut!!!

Today, the latest edition of San Diego Style Weddings Magazine hits newsstands for 2008-2009. We're excited to announce that What A Wedding! will be featured in it for the next year, in 3 areas of the magazine: page 46 (our business Ad)... page 54 ("Wedding Consultants Pro's in the Know") ... and page 322 ("Vintage Charm" tablescape).

So, be sure to pick up a copy and also check us out on their website!

Sadly, the pictures selected on page 322 for the tablescape were not my choices, and they do our table design NO justice. Additionally, the colors we used are not clearly represented in the photos. And the beautiful floral arrangements created by Paula Rae of Rae Florae are difficult to see. So, in short... the true details, design and vision we had for our table was lost due to the pictures selected for the magazine. But, that's alright, because the table was truly beautiful in person!

Haute Water

Larissa & David

A charming location with a beautiful backdrop set the scene for Larissa and David's wedding. The two exchanged vows on the lake at the Fairbanks Ranch Clubhouse.

The gazebo area was quite a long walk from the parking lot. So, a couple of golf carts were used to were used to transport guests to the ceremony and then back to the reception patio.

Amanda & Kyle

Amanda and Kyle were married at Church of the Good Shepherd. A cute and quaint little church in Bonita. Amanda was one of the most relaxed brides that I've ever worked with. She was finishing law school and, therefore, could not allow the planning to stress her out. So, I really appreciated the trust that she placed in me to ensure that the wedding turned out as we'd discussed (and as she envisioned). As a result, I was able to do my job and she was able to be the bride and enjoy her day.... and it was an absolutely perfect day!

Wine-Themed Wedding

These are just a few sneak-peek pictures that I took at Amanda and Kyle's wedding this past Saturday (click to enlarge).

The couple shares an enjoyment of wine and together they have attended a number of wineries. So, they chose to subtly incorporate that theme into their wedding. Some of the decor elements included: the use of corks on their escort cards, tables labeled with the names of wineries and various wine glasses filled with floating flowers.

Gallery Reception

Yesterday's wedding had a number of special elements. One touch that I loved were the 7 canvases that the couple wanted displayed on easels, as their guests entered the reception room. The reception was held at the Marina Village in the Sunset Room that overlooks Mission Bay. Since it was on the second floor, we were able to place 3 photo canvases at the entry on the 1st floor, then 2 more on the staircase landing and the last 2 at the top of the stairs on the second floor. The photos were absolutely beautiful and high quality. The bride and groom looked like professional models as the pictures resembled something out of a magazine. When guests walked in, the photos became conversation pieces that created a "gallery feel" leading into the lovely reception.

Unfortunately, I forgot my camera. So, the photos below were taken with my phone (and definitely do them NO justice). But, I can't wait to receive the ceremony and reception pictures from the photographer. So, be sure to check back for those!

Katrina and Eddie were married at St. Charles Catholic Church and held their reception at Admiral Kidd Club.

The pink and green color scheme was bright and cheery, just like Katrina's sweet personality. From the bride... to the flowers... to the cake... everything was beautiful and the day ran smoothly. Their guests had a wonderful time and the dance floor remained full until the very last song of the night!

Wedding DONT'S

I can guarantee that as you plan your wedding, you'll receive more than enough advice from everyone telling you what to DO. But what about the DONT'S? Well, here are 10 "wedding don'ts" to help you avoid common pitfalls:

1. DON’T create a wedding for others at the expense of your personal desires and responsibilities. A wedding is an event intended to bring people together. But more than anything else, it is about uniting two people together for life. As you begin planning your wedding, try to focus on creating the kind of celebration YOU want, and not one you think other people will expect you to have. Yes, it’s important to consider other people’s feelings. But don't make choices to please others if they will make you unhappy. And definitely don’t spend more than you can afford just to "keep up with the Joneses." When the reception ends... the debt remains. So, don't enter your newlywed life with financial stresses.

2. DON’T invite people just because you think you have to. Simply put: each additional guest means an increase in cost. If you have a specific budget limit, you reduce your ability to spend on other items each time you increase the headcount. For example, more guests can mean fewer flowers or a less extravagant menu. On your wedding day, be surrounded by those who you care about most and not by people that you hardly recognize.

3. DON’T be late. This rule applies to the bride, the groom, and everyone else involved in the wedding. Yes, it's your day. But don't make others miserable. Try to start your wedding on time. If you don’t, everything will run behind schedule, and that can create real problems at your reception location. If locations or vendors end up working later than originally scheduled, you may find unpleasant overtime charges added to your final bill.

4. DON'T worry about things going wrong. Any good event planner will tell you that not everything goes right all the time. This is the real world and “stuff happens.” Keep your sense of humor and a flexible attitude. There’s no point in panicking the morning of the wedding. Minor problems will probably occur and no one will even notice (remember, your guests don't know all of your plans anyway. So they won't know if something went wrong or was missing). If a big problem is looming, there’s probably little that can be done about it at this point. The show must go on, so why worry? It helps to hire a planner so that you can focus on what is really important – vowing to love and be with your spouse forever. Let your wedding coordinator take care of the final details. And you just relax, smile, and enjoy your special day.

5. DON’T forget to send thank-you notes. When you receive a gift from a shower or the wedding, you should send out Thank You notes ASAP after the wedding day. The general guideline is 5 weeks. Make sure the notes are simple but personal.

6. DON’T include things that don’t matter to you. Observing wedding traditions can be nice, but they aren't essential. You don’t have to have a flowergirl and ringbearer (or even adult attendants) if you don't want to. Maybe you’re a bride who finds the garter toss ritual embarrassing...if so, skip it. There's no law that says you can’t walk yourself down the aisle and give yourself away. Create your own traditions!

7. DON’T forget to eat. Famished, fainting brides and grooms are a bigger problem than you might imagine. Don't skip breakfast because it might be your only meal of the day. If jitters have your stomach in a knot, try to eat a few saltines. Many couples are so busy visiting with guests at the reception that they barely get a bite of their own reception menu. Not eating can make you cranky at the least; and cause you to faint at the worst. So, eat a meal before the wedding (especially if you're going to drink), and try to eat at the reception too.

8. DON’T spend too much time with any particular guest. It may be difficult, but you should make it your goal to spend at least a few minutes visiting with each of your wedding guests. The only way you’re going to make it through the crowd and still do all the other things you’re supposed to do (have your first dance, toasts, dinner, and cut the cake) is if you push yourself to be brief with each guest. You can always circle back later and spend some extra time with your favorite people.

9. DON’T let guests drink and drive. An open bar is a nice thing at a wedding, but give your bartenders free reign to cut people off to ensure their safety. Nothing puts a damper on a wedding day like alcohol-induced drama. Drunk people get in fights, say embarrassing things, and even get in traumatic car accidents. Have business cards for local taxi companies on or near the bar or pre-select a few volunteers to serve as designated drives. It only takes an instant for the memory of your wedding celebration to be scarred by a tragic accident.

10. DON’T forget what it’s really all about. Your wedding day will pass quickly. All the months of planning will be realized in just a few short hours. Guests will ooh and aah over your beautiful gown; they’ll marvel at the lovely flowers; they’ll enjoy the delicious reception menu you organized so carefully. A wedding is the celebration of something much more important: the decision two people make to join together and live their lives as one. The couple was married at Tom Ham's Lighthouse with 75 guests in attendance. Due to the smaller guest count, the couple held the reception inside of the Harbor View Room. The intimate size created a comfortable, family environment and allowed all guests to feel connected to the celebration.

Vintage-Style Video

Super 8 mm film (also simply called Super 8) is a motion picture film format released in 1965 by Eastman Kodak.

You may recall seeing this grainy, old fashioned type of video used for old home movies. Well, now you can bring that same vintage feel to your wedding day video, since some videographers are offering a super 8mm film option. Just watching the footage and listening to the background music is sure to evoke such wonderful emotions and memories for you and your husband.

Lazy Day Project

My husband and I bought our new house a year ago. And (of course) out of excitement, I wanted to go out and buy all new furnishings. But, family and friends kept telling me to wait and purchase things little-by-little. So, I took their advice and throughout the year, we bought various items.

Last weekend, we purchased a new area rug and I immediately developed a dislike for our old dining room set. So, today I turned into Martha Stewart and re-upholstered the chairs. I really enjoy decorating, but I ended up doing a better job than I expected. Check out the "before" and "after" picture!

Never Too Many Minis

I love these little donuts!!! Well actually, how can you not? They're fresh, warm, lightly crispy and just soooo doggone yummy! But, best of all... they can be made on-the-spot at your party, shower or reception.

I've attended a few events where mini donuts have been served and I can never eat just one... BAG, that is! You get about 8-10 mini donuts per bag that are sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon. However, if preferred, you can also select other toppings or dipping sauces (chocolate, vanilla icing, etc.). Or you may choose to have them prepared as a dessert, sitting in martini glasses with ice cream and whipped topping. The options are endless!

The donut making equipment is compact enough to have it situated in a selected corner of the room. Additionally, it can be used indoors. But, wherever it's set-up, your guests will inevitably follow the tempting aroma and find these tiny treats.

The two companies that I have experienced here in San Diego are Party Donuts and Dolce Donuts. Both have been equally delicious. But, give them a try for yourself. I guarantee you'll agree, that you can never have too many minis!

Yvonne & Noel

Yvonne and Noel were married at The Water Conservation Garden on the campus of Cuyamaca College. Prior to this wedding, I was not familiar with the venue. But I was quite taken with this little gem in east county! The garden is beautiful and has a few different locations where the ceremony can be held. And, of course, there are a number of amazing spots for taking pictures. (click photos to enlarge)

Everything about Yvonne and Noel's wedding was beautiful... the couple, the location, the colors, the decor and more! The green, flowy hanging fabric took longer than expected to attach, and a few last-minute revisions had to be made. But, like everything else that day, it turned out amazingly!

A special touch: The couple loves going to Jamba Juice. So, they decided to incorporate that into their wedding and had small cups of their favorite flavor smoothie delivered during cocktail hour. Other fun elements were the mini monogrammed Martinelli's apple cider favors and the escort cards that were attached to See's candy suckers... the gold candy wrappers perfectly matched the color scheme.

At yesterday's wedding the newlyweds (Alana & Danny) had a coffee station set-up for the reception. This cute little after-dinner spread contained a variety of coffees, flavored creamers, tea bags, individual chocolates and clear Irish coffee mugs.

The cutest touch to the coffee station were these chocolate monogrammed spoons. The bride & bridesmaids met at the mother-of-the-brides house for a fun, spoon-dipping girls night together. They created these hand dipped favors for guests to stir into their coffee. Everyone loved them and the kids simply unwrapped and licked the spoons like chocolate lollipops!

No no no... Please don't turn into a Bridezilla with your family, friends and fiance! Instead, I'm referring to Lash Out -professional eyelash extensions. Three months ago I tried eyelash extensions and now I'm completely hooked. The extensions are applied one-by-one to your own lashes. The result is longer, thicker, beautiful and natural-looking eyelashes (and no mascara is needed).

The initial application process takes about 45 minutes - 1 hour, depending on the fullness you're seeking. Then simple touch-ups are needed usually every 2-3 weeks (depending on the natural growth/fall out cycle of your lashes). So, brides can have the process completed a few days prior to the wedding and the lashes will remain beautiful throughout your honeymoon (swimming and all).

I've been so lucky to work with a number of great couples... and now Marissa and Raul are added to the list. This beautiful bride and handsome groom were married at the Administration Courtyard Lawn (Balboa Park East Mesa) and held their reception at the Admiral Baker Clubhouse. The black and deep red color scheme created a romantic feel for their Spanish-themed wedding. Magazine Photo Shoot

Today I had the fantastic opportunity to participate in a tablescape photo shoot for San Diego Style Weddings magazine (http://www.sandiegostyleweddings.com/). Wedding coordinators that advertise in the magazine were paired with florists to create a table design that will be featured in the latest edition coming out this Fall. I worked with florist, Paula Rae Anderson, of Rae Florea (http://www.raeflorae.com/) and we had such a fun time merging our different styles and creativity. Ultimately, we came up with a table that turned out even better than we imagined!

Below is a (very) sneak peak "teaser" picture showing one of the details used in decorating our table. However, to see the table in its entirety, you'll have to wait until the new edition comes out this October. So be sure to pick it up!

Laura & Brett

Laura and Brett were such a great couple to work with. Not only do they make such a cute pair... but they have such fun personalities. The two were married at the Bernardo Winery and, do to the love for their 4-legged "children", they chose to have their 2 dogs play the role of "ring-canine" and "flower-canine". Unfortunately these 2 furry firends weren't invited to stay for the reception. So, they were picked up and taken home by a great little company called Fetch! Pet Care.

A fun touch to Laura and Brett's wedding was that they decided not to have plated meals, a buffet or food stations. Instead they wanted more mingling and movement to occur at their reception. So they selected to have ALL hand-passed hor'dourves throughout the night. Additionally, the couple went with a variety of mini sweet treats as the dessert selection for thier guests to enjoy!

Simple Green

Sometimes the idea of "going green" can seem like a daunting task. Especially when it comes to adding "green" elements to your wedding. However, at a recent event, florist Rene van Rems discussed simple ways that you can "go green"! For example, Rene used items like a plastic milk container and a soda can to act as vases for his beautiful arrangements. Of course, the key is to creatively camouflage the outside of these recycled containers. (click picture to enlarge)

So, search the house for items that can be re-used to hold your flowers. The varied sizes will add to the uniqueness of the arrangements. But, the best thing is that this will help save you money while you help save the environment!

Day-Of Coordinating Defined

If you're getting married, I'm sure you've heard the term "day-of coordinating" (and "month-of coordinating"). But, do you really know what it involves?

Day-of coordinating works best for the couple that is truly capable of planning their entire wedding and is only seeking assistance with the final loose ends before "tying the knot". However, the term "day-of coordinating" can be quite misleading. It would be very difficult for a wedding coordinator to only show up on the day of your wedding and execute the plans to your satisfaction. So, in actuality, "day-of" services typically begin a few weeks prior to the wedding day. This allows the coordinator to do such things as: complete a walk-through of the venue, meet to gather information about you and your wedding plans, create timelines, contact your vendors, gather necessary decorating items and (many times) direct the rehearsal. Then, on the wedding day, the coordinator acts as the bride's assistant to make sure the day is as you've planned it to be. This includes arriving early, greeting and over-seeing your vendors, setting-up, putting out any "fires", acting as the point-of-contact, assisting guests, tending to the bride/groom/bridal party/parents, remaining on site to the end of the event, packing up any leftover items and more...WHEW! And that's only for DAY-OF coordinating.

Keep in mind that, out of all of the vendors you book, a wedding coordinator will be the one spending the most time with you, obtaining the most details about the wedding and doing the most running around on the wedding day to keep everything in order. So, don't be deceived by a DJ, caterer, church coordinator or on-site staff member that agrees to act as your "wedding coordinator". Their assistance is limited and will not include all of the services mentioned above. So, be sure to present a list of questions to any other vendor that offers to also be your coordinator. A true wedding coordinator is focused on you and your entire wedding day. So, when it comes to choosing vendors, a coordinator should be at the very top of the list and definitely not skipped (or skimped on)!

Of course, there are some coordinators that do NOT offer day-of coordinating... for obvious reasons. When dealing with one of the most important days in a person's life, it's not ideal to jump in on the tail-end of the planning. With day-of services, a coordinator can often walk into a situation that includes working with unfamiliar/unreliable vendors and uncovering important details that were over-looked. So, this can create additional unexpected work for the coordinator... and possibly additional charges to you.

So, to avoid any additional stress, problems and charges, it's advised that you hire a coordinator earlier in the planning process (for MORE than just "day-of" services). Knowledgeable coordinators can prevent you from making costly mistakes and unnecessary purchases. We can also connect you with reliable vendors that match your style and personality. And best of all, we can be there during the planning stages to guide, encourage, advise, reduce stress and make sure the engagement is an enjoyable time for you and your fiance.

So, definitely don't go it alone... Happy Planning!

Natalie & Chris

"Just So Sweet"... now that's exactly how I would describe Natalie and Chris. From our first meeting, I could just feel the true love between these two. Chris accompanied Natalie to all of our meetings (which is often rare for a groom) and he was quite involved in the planning.

The couple had a beach-themed wedding where the ceremony took place at Seagrove Park in Del Mar and the reception was held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. It's hard to beat the beautiful beach backdrop at Seagrove Park and the glass-enclosed Pavilion room at the Hyatt is the perfect location for creating that open, outdoor feel (while still being indoors).

One of my favorite details was the chocolate-brown colored cake decorated with white seashell designs that greeted guests as they entered the ballroom!

Janelle & Nelson

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to assist another wonderful bride and groom with their wedding. The couple exchanged vows at Our Lady of the Rosary in Little Italy, and then partied the night away at the beautiful Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad.

Then entire day was amazing! But, one fantastic "special touch" was the same-day-edit that played after the couple's photo montage. During the reception, guests were able to experience parts of the wedding day all over again. You could see the amazement as many of them asked, "how did they get this video together so quickly". Well it was the wonderful work of two great videographers with Red 5 Studios. I truly enjoyed working with Janelle. During every meeting (or phone conversation) we had, Janelle was always full of energy and excitement. I loved how her wedding day visions just rolled off of her tongue "a mile a minute" (she seemed to only take a breath when absolutely necessary). I had no problem keeping up with her because that is the typical lightening-speed at which my best friend and I communicate. So, it was crystal clear that Janelle was a bride that knew exactly what she wanted... and I was up for the challenge to make it a reality!

Well, after months of planning... the wedding day went off without a glitch! I have to say that one of the best moments was seeing Janelle's reaction when she and Nelson saw the reception room in all of its splendor (prior to the guests entering). She jumped up and down and cheered with joy. With that, I knew Janelle's wedding day visions had become a reality for her!

What a great wedding! Congratulations to the Newlyweds.

Maricel & Cameron

Maricel and Cameron were married at the Immaculata (at USD) with 350 family and friends in attendance. The reception was held at the Marriott in Del Mar.

One of the "fun" moments was rushing to flip the reception ballroom in only 1-hour after a Bar Mitzvah. So, while guests were enjoying cocktail hour... myself and my assistants, along with the florist, linen company, and hotel staff worked together to switch the room into the couple's pink and burgundy dream (which included many details and 35 tables)! But, it all worked out beautifully and no one knew about the drama that was occurring behind closed doors. Thank goodness I love what I do!

I love all of the details that couples incorporate into their wedding day. It's usually these simple elements that have a personal meaning or tie a theme together. When used correctly the small details can add that unique touch to your wedding (without being overwhelming). Here are a few pictures of the details that my couples incorporated into their weddings (click photo to enlarge):

You can't go wrong with candy... it's always a sweet detail! Here you see personalized candy bars and also See's Candy suckers with escort cards attached. Details, like a seashell bookmark, not only add to the beach theme... but it's also a favor that your guests can actually use! How about adding a little "bling" detail to your bouquet with a rhinestone monogram? One couple of mine had a "Hollywood" wedding. They incorporated movie-themed details.... in an tasteful manner. They used movie titles for table names and star-studded escort cards resembled the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Simple details like the "Admit One" tickets on the programs also added to the theme. And, of course, it doesn't get much more detailed than the beautiful Henna artwork that adorned one of my brides.
